I just got home from being in Paris, and one of the highlights of this visit was to see the exhibition of Berthe Morisot at the Musee Marmottan Monet in person. This book was available in the giftshop but only in french and I wanted a copy in english. This is an outstanding book about the artists life as well as a very nice look at her work. I did purchase the catalog book there at the shop and see now its not only available here at Amazon, but for a lesser price! When taking in the euro to dollar conversion buying at Amazon saved me at least 30%, plus I didn't have to haul it back from Paris.Great book that you will enjoy for years. Berthe Morisot is due every bit of attention as she was easily as talented and a master as her contemporaries of Monet, Degas, Renoir, etc. In fact I believe she had a better command of colour in her palette and captured the essence of her subjects with much greater clarity many times than did the other Impressionists of whom I truly love. I hope her work continues to please a larger audience now and in the future.
A real treasure, beautiful book on a special artist.
beautiful artwork
Excellent
Super service. My favorite book. Thank you.
I'm less taken with the book than other reviewers here. The paintings and their reproductions in the book are indeed terrific. But the text has too many lapses, and another editorial check might have helped. Just a couple of examples: on p. 36, the text reads, "The main protagonists are often placed at the edge of the picture, as in "Jeune Femme cousant dans un jardin, . . . " whose empty chair the foreground recalls that of Degas's. . . ." But in the illustration, p. 98, the young woman of the title is dead center, and there is no empty chair anywhere in the painting. The only painting I could find in the book that answers to this description is "Sur la terrasse," p. 85. On p. 38, Morisot is quoted, herself quoting Renoir, writing in her notebook that "Music and painting should never be literary," but only 3 pages later the author treats her as "abolishing the frontiers between between painting and writing," apparently completely misconstruing Morisot's (and Renoir's) firm intention to avoid narrative in their art. An alert editor should have spotted and corrected such seeming self-contradictions within the text or between painting and text. The author also frequently quotes the poet Stéphane Mallarmé, but nowhere describes his relationship with Morisot (did they even have one, or did Mallarmé simply write occasionally about her work?) or puts these rather vague and flowery tributes in any sort of context. [Later: I was wrong, and certainly apologize. There is a section at the end of the book about Morisot and various writers, including Mallarmé.] All that said, the paintings and some of the texts are a wonderful and lucid exploration of Morisot's work, and tell me much more about her than I'd ever expected to know,. I'm grateful to have it.
All too many art historians, "afflicted by the myopia of misogyny," to quote this book, have failed to recognize that Berthe Morisot painted some of the key masterpieces of Impressionism. There are vibrant reproductions of her groundbreaking paintings in this book. Almost every page, in fact, is a feast of light-struck color and dramatic brushwork. Her work reproduces beautifully on the heavy, silky paper used in this printing. The writing is as effervescent and inspiring as the illustrations. I have always been thrilled by the work of Berthe Morisot without knowing why. This author gave me new insight into the secrets of her power and the depth within her atmospheric art. He takes us beyond the "feminine charm" considered her chief attribute by obtuse male critics to what Paul Valery called her "great gift of reducing things to their essence."The book covers Morisot's early influences and art education, her close relationship with her sister Edma who studied and painted along with Berthe, her lifelong friendship with Édouard Manet, her marriage to his brother, and her painterly record of the everyday life of her daughter Julie from childhood to young womanhood. The text examines Morisot's mastery of transparency, unequalled by any other Impressionist, how she achieved unique effects by applying the techniques of watercolor to oil paintings, her rare ability to paint young women and children without falling into sentimentality, her romance with en plein air painting, and the relationship of her paintings to Mallarmé's poetry. There are wonderful quotes from the writers in Morisot's circle who had a deep understanding of her art. And poignant quotes from the artist's notebooks and letters. This is a delightful book, visually exciting and a pleasure to read.
