From the Inside Flap
Amanda came awake to an awful throbbing in her head. She felt terrible. What had hap-She tensed as she remembered the unseen man.His words.Terrified, she pushed herself up, and quickly learned she was on a cold concrete floor, in a very small, dust covered room...And handcuffed to an unknown blond man.A scream wedged itself in her throat, but she held it back.Amanda took in her surroundings. There was no furniture or anything else. The only light came from a small bulb in the center of the ceiling.Okay, so she wasn't in immediate danger.Still far from comforted, she looked at the body beside her. He lay with his back to her, and he was either dead or unconscious.Hesitantly, she reached out and placed her hand against his tawny neck to check his pulse. A strong, heavy heartbeat thumped against her fingertips. Relieved he was alive, she tried to shake him.He moaned low in his throat, then slowly blinked his eyes open. With a curse, he grabbed her by the shoulders. Before she could move, he rolled over with her, pinning her against the floor beneath his body as he held her wrists above her head. Those dark, captivating eyes searched hers suspiciously.Every inch of him was pressed intimately against her and she became instantly aware of the fact that his arms weren't the only part of his body that was rock hard and solid. His hips rested dead center between her legs while his hard, taut stomach leaned against her in a way that brought a flush to her cheeks. Made her feel hot and tingly. Breathless.

***Slight Spoilers-but no major plot give aways***Amanda was mistakenly abducted at her sister Tabitha’s house, transported to a warehouse and handcuffed to an unconscious vampire, Kyrian. Author establishes they don’t know each other. When he wakes up he inhales her scent and says, “You’re not Tabitha Deveroux.†She asks, “You know T?†He makes a comparison in his thoughts between her & her sister Tabitha. Nothing supported the jump of him assuming she was Tabitha’s sister.. Author established in 1st chapter that Amanda’s sister’s husband was a Greek demigod, whose brother & parents were Greek gods. The demon holding them tells them they’ll never get rid of the magical cuffs as they can only be opened by a god. The demon then releases them, telling them they have until sunset before he starts hunting them. They spend all day hidden in a friends morgue/office making calls & plans for their escape, while still wearing the cuffs. Amanda only mentions once, in passing, that she may be able to help with the cuffs, but that’s it. Kyrian doesn’t follow up on that or ask questions. Amanda waits until sunset to call her sister and doesn’t tell her what she needs, just makes sure her sister & demigod husband will be home so she can talk to them about “somethingâ€. The only suspense is why they are so stupid and wait all day before even talking about or working on a plan to get the cuffs off. Apparently it makes a better fight scene when they are attacked & still cuffed together.. Kyrian says Amanda will be fine at her sister Grace’s house because the demons can’t enter a home unless their invited-but the demon attacked her earlier in her sister Tabatha’s house. Author never explains how the demon was able to enter Tabitha’s house.. Kyrian says Amanda only needs to stay at Grace’s that one night because by the next night the demon will be dead (by Kyrian‘s hand). Kyrian immediately goes home to sleep because the demon has gone into a safe zone & won’t be able to come out for several days. Why did Kyrian think he’d kill the demon before the next night when he knew the demon was locked away for several days? Author doesn’t explain the inconsistency.. The above are all in the first 25% of the story. It actually got somewhat better or maybe I just started over looking all the discrepancies. I’ve never read anything else by this author and I can’t imagine anything inducing me to read her work in the future.
This book is okay. I've read several urban fantasy series, including The Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward, The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning and the The Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost. When you catch up to the author it forces you to look for a new series to sink into while you wait for new books to come out. Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter Series was next. I have to say, looking at her website WOW'd me. I liked the description of the book, but 25 pages in, I had a problem. The dialogue between the characters is overkill for me. She's trying to create the plot too much through the dialogue (and less through emotion or internal dialogue through observation and actions) and the conversation comes off fake or unrealistic....all I can think is who has conversations that play out like that? Who uses the word 'buster' anymore when getting someone's attention? Or she lays it on too thick.....like sometimes there is nothing building up to comment and I think where did that come from.... Dialogue in a book can be a real turn off for me if not done well. I'm having a hard time deciding if I take this series further than book one.
I gave this five stars because I am a sucker for a love story with lots of action. I read this book because I am a huge fan of Cassandra Clare, and recently found out about this author and this dark hunter book series... I have to say I really like this author too. Having said that, I haven't read anything else by Sherrilyn Kenyon, but if Cassandra Clare was inspired to write her shadowhunter stories by reading the dark hunter series, I don't see what the big deal is. I am a visual artist and I get ideas from all manner of artists, from old masters to contemporaries... so do musicians, cinematographers, chefs, writers, all artists do.... I do want to read more of Kenyon's Dark Hunter books to make my own analysis, but so far I like both authors and their styles and stories. I do think that Clare's more modern approach to names for characters and staying away from references to the gods has increased her popularity over Kenyon's stories maybe. But I don't believe, at this early point in reading the dark hunter series anyway, that Cassandra Clare should be accused of plagiarism. Artist are inspired by the past, present, and possibilities of the future. Lay off hate. And enjoy fellow artisans work even if it resembles your own.... Keep writing Kenyon and Clare! Love you both!
I am just 80% into this book and I cannot stomach anymore of the constant, badly written sexual content, not to mention the predictable, sophomoric plot. This makes Twilight, which I actually could enjoy enough seem like classic literature. I have read literally hundreds of books in the fantasy/paranormal genre, but I will not finish this one, let alone the other-what 20?-books in this series. I am so bored by this one, I have no desire to try the others. Meh
