I was assigned one of the articles in it, Nacy Huston's "The Matrix Of War: Mothers And Heroes" while in a class on medieval Celtic literature, and it was a very interesting essay.The only other review for this book states that it was almost unreadably dry, and I have to say I can only imagine. In the context of a fascinating course of study, Huston's article was absolutely indispensable, and indeed has given me a wonderful perspective on the twinned concepts of birth and warmaking. (Very interesting to debate with my sister, a captain in the Army currently simultaneously preparing for her second tour of duty in Iraq... and her wedding.)But I can imagine that sitting down with a glass of wine in your favorite easy chair and reading this book cover-to-cover would be rather... unrewarding... for the average reader not already hip-deep in study of Celtic mythology. I'll give you a hint: If the section heading "Cuchulainn And Couvade" doesn't immediately intrigue you, you're not likely to be spellbound by this. (It did intrigue me, so there you have my bias laid bare. Menstruation rituals and supernatural heroes? Sign me up!!)
