The Nobel Prize for Literature will be a meaningless trinket until it is awarded to Tom Wolfe. For over forty years, Wolfe has graced American literature with its finest, and often most most startling, writing. Many know him as the author of the definitive book on NASA, "The Right Stuff;" others, for his unforgettable satire on the New York financial world in the 1980s, "The Bonfire of the Vanities." Other excellent novels followed, such as "A Man in Full, " "I Am Charlotte Simmons," and the recent "Back to Blood." All of these have firmly established Wolfe as America's premier social satirist, and possibly our greatest living novelist. But Wolfe first achieved prominence, in the 1960s, as an essayist, and his unforgettable articles on everything from the roots of NASCAR to the New York fashion scene have displayed an utterly unique voice and even form, as Wolfe often toys with grammar and even orthography in order to demonstrate the true art of writing. He has even written very specialized books on architecture, art criticism, and, most recently, language itself."The Purple Decades" is an anthology of some of his best essays, including his look at automobile racing ("The Last American Hero"), his profile of Chuck Yeager, from "The Right Stuff," and two of his most important extended essays: "Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers" and "The Me Decade and the Third Great Awakening." ("The Me Decade," referring to the 1970s, was a phrase of Wolfe's own invention.) The collection also includes "The Intelligent Co-Ed's Guide to America" and other essays which simply shouldn't be missed.Whether creating 600-page novels or ten-page essays, Tom Wolfe is arguably the most versatile and incisive writer that America has produced in a century. This anthology presents him at his best.

I've never read his magazine articles, so, except for the excerpts from The Right Stuff, it was all new to me. The first few articles were entertaining, in his snide way. Then it denigrated into babble, as far as I was concerned. He took a few concepts of the reviewed period, and beat it to death. I skipped through three or four stories after trying to read them. Then I was reminded of the quality work he could create, with The Right Stuff excerpt...a book I thoroughly enjoyed (far superior to the movie, in my view). Overall, I was disappointed.

Wow. First time rereading some of this in years, and it still resonates and it is still tremendous writing and thinking. Tom Wolfe is a literary sociologist, helping us see all sorts of our US culture.

Wolfe is able to encapsulate the experience of the city with hilarious precision.

An exhilarating collection of Wolfe's early journalistic pieces, a candid view of the strange way things once were.~kindlefrenzy.weebly.com

I read the stories in this book in the early 70's. Radical Chic and Mau Mauing the Flack Catchers turned me away from the liberal orthodoxy my Freshman Civics teacher, not a bad person to be sure, tried to feed us. Yeager is a great story for those who haven't read the Right Stuff, and if you haven't, you will want to after you read Yeager. If you want to understand the new journalism, this is the best place to start.

A lot--perhaps too much--of Wolfe's early rambunctious style. I remembered the devastating account of the Black Panthers (original version) at the Leonard Bernstein town house, but I'd forgotten how snarky it was, even if well deserved. The Ken Kesey (sp?) drug infused bus trip I'd hadn't ever read: it was like watching a train wreck. I was glad for it to be over.

Ever heard of "purple prose"? This prose is fudge-colored.Also chock-full of some of the worst original Wolfe,"artwork", I've ever seen,(see the bookjacket for a taste). They remind me of the paintings done by "J.J.", from the t.v. show, Good Times. Complete garbage.I had to remove this book from my home.
