Rampant monster action and gore. A hard-nosed military squad that reminded me of Dog Soldiers, a fun read and would make a great SyFy channel movie

When a British commando unit drops into the frozen Canadian wastes west of Baffin Island to see what a mysterious Russian ship is doing in Canadian waters, it doesn’t take long to discover the carnage left behind by the cover creature. Not all six members of the S-Squad are going to make to the end of Meikle’s story, and battling those critters through about a 100 pages doesn’t leave any room for a double agent – which I expected to see in a tale inspired by Alistair MacLean. The opening, in a deserted fishing village at night, was atmospheric, but, to be honest, the critters didn’t do much for me. I did appreciate, being interested in geology, the origin story Meikle gives them.Meikle does a nice job with the physical details. Cold water, however shallow, can kill quickly.. Fingers uncovered quickly become too numb to fire weapons. A character is half blinded from operating a cutting torch. While I wished for some human treachery added to the giant bug plot and found the bugs eviscerating but not very emotionally invigorating, I am interested in more adventures of the S-Squad.

The canadian government detects a Russian boat straying strangely close to its waters, not responding to any communications, so they ask for a British special forces team to investigate. Naturally, when our plucky Scots and Irishmen reach the vessel, they find a lot of corpses, one beautiful Russian survivor, and...a whole bunch of giant hungry isopods waiting to be unleashed upon the world! As you can expect, they have to stop it :pSo yeah, that's pretty much it, and what you just heard is what you get. There's a lot of fun action and gunplay, some gore (the isopods kill a bunch of people in violent ways), and the classic Scottish bantz between the special ops team members is nice. This also helps the characters stand out :D If you guys don't know what giant isopods are, they're the deep-sea version of the little pillbugs/roly-polies we see on land, except deep sea gigantism makes them grow to like 2 feet in length. The mutant ones in this book are the size of small cars. So that might make things seem funny rather than scary, but either way, I got a good deal of enjoyment out of this even if it's not the most distinguished novel ever, so 4 stars from me :D

The action is non-stop in this fun read. Meikle develops characters and scenarios in a way that allows the reader to relate to the subject matter. Isn't that what good writing is supposed to do? The beasts in Infestation are numerous, come in all sizes, and are a bit :) aggressive. Pick it up. Read it on a boat. And beware of your surroundings. Good stuff!

This is my second book by William Meikle, and I do enjoy his writing. This book is full of creepy creatures, a chilling setting and lots of action. Worth the read if you are a creature feature enthusiast!

It’s a lot of fun when you stumble on a new favorite author, even more fun when that new author has the kind of backlog of books that William Meikle has.I’m hooked on the S-Squad series now and this addiction started with this book, INFESTATION, but I almost missed it.I’ve always been a fan of military sci-fi/horror movies like PREDATOR, ALIENS, and DOG SOLDIERS, but I’d never read any books like those.I had seen INFESTATION around, but it wasn’t until I caught wind of OPERATION: ANTARCTICA with its “Nazi UFO’s in Antarctica” that I ran back and jumped on the first book in the series. The books aren’t really dependent on a given reading order, but I’m sure as hell not going to miss any.Monsters and machines guns are great, but I think what really sells the military horror genre is the interplay and camaraderie of the main characters. The squad seem like a good bunch of blokes to face death with. One concern I did have reading an ongoing series was that the characters would be essentially invulnerable because they had to be back in time for the next book. No spoilers, but that wasn’t really a problem. Not to be vague, but this particular monster was unexpected and kept me curious. I think it is an interesting twist in these books that you have these heavily armed commandos, but their situations require more than just shooting and swearing to resolve.INFESTATION works on every level from the action-packed plot to the rock solid prose. I think the suspenseful pauses do as much heavy lifting as the full-on blow ups.As I write this review, I’ve already read three books into the series and the hits keep coming.

This book is just what the doctor ordered. After finishing the last (600+ pgs.) novel that I read, I was in the mood for something light & fun, and this book delivered! I was able to just sit back, with my bag of Mackie's Haggis & Cracked Pepper potato chips, and enjoy the first adventure of Meikle's "S-Squad" (a Scottish Special Forces team). In this mission, the team comes across giant isopods (crustaceans). You definitely do not want to be bitten or scratched by one of these things! The action within the story is fast and furious. (Now that I've written that, this book is kind of like a Fast & Furious film - mindless entertainment, and I mean that in a good way!) In fact, this story would make for a great SyFy movie.

I did not experience any surges of suspense, no plot twists ( None that at least had an impact on me ) and nothing in thisbook made me feel compelled to finish reading it, though I did anyway. Why? Well, I'm sure it had something to do with howeasy-to-read the book was... coupled with the fact that things were happening fairly fast. As long as the heroes were kept inalmost constant trouble, it drew me to finish it. It is enjoyable, at some points. Not just because of how absurd things are, but Meikle's pretty okay in the way he describesthe action. Unfortunately, I never really cared much about the characters. I'm not sure why. Nothing about them made me careon a deeper level.
