Sloan and Wolitzer' s novel about two extremely different girls brought together by sleuthing their parent's love life is unpredictable authentic and outright hilarious. I could put this novel down. Now I am trying to find just the right reader to recommend this creative novel. Wish I had written it! My writer friends will use this novel as exemplary prose for learning the craft of middle grade writing. Read TO NIGHT OWL FROM DOGFISH for a great read. I may just read it all over again, now, just as 'tween readers love to do. I am an adult who loves MG novels and everything Holly Goldberg Sloan writes.
I know this for young people but I'm 70 and enjoyed what this book said + how it said it.
What an enjoyable un-put-downable read. Absolutely top-notch. Excellent, funny, warm and wonderful.
Rating: 4.5 StarsI desperately wanted to read this book for several reasons:1. I am a HUGE fan of Wolitzer's work. I have read, and adored, many of her adult and YA books.2. There is just something about camp books that delights me.3. I love epistolary novels.4. There is a Parent Trap like storyline in there, and that's a film I will always love.Well, I am happy to report, that the above mentioned things contributed to a wonderful reading experience, but there was so much more to this novel than what I listed.I am going to admit, it was insta-love for me. I was smitten with Avery and Bett from their very first exchange. Bett's larger than life personality and tell-it-like-it-is philosophy made me smile, and Avery being so straight-laced and grounded was the perfect foil for her.The early letters between the two were filled with fun facts and some plotting, but you could also see Bett and Avery discovering some commonalities and a friendship slowly emerging. In addition to seeing their friendship grow and flourish, I also saw the girls grow and flourish. This book took place over two years time, and I saw Bett and Avery mature physically, mentally, and emotionally.I also loved the idea of family presented in this novel. Both Bett and Avery were being raised by single fathers, and though Avery knew her biological mother, Bett only knew of the surrogate who carried her. It's always lovely to see such diverse families in books. The authors also incorporated the idea of found-family, and I have to say, this "family" was filled with so much love and joy, it was really heartwarming to be around them. There were so many other things in this book that impressed me too:• The authentic dialog between the girls• The hijinks, oh my, they were fun• Gaga, aka, Betty 1, aka, Bett's grandma â¤ï¸â€¢Â A small redemption arc for one of the auxiliary characters• Animal interactions and the great outdoors• A pretty dramatic climax• A twist I didn't expectI wore a smile on my face from the beginning of this book to the very last page. This story was fun and sweet and touching and emphasized three really wonderful things: friends, family, and love.
Avery Bloom is bookish twelve years old who lives in New York City. She can be intense and she is afraid of many things, especially the water. Bett Devlin is a fearless twelve-year-old who lives in California. She loves the water, animals and she is outgoing. While the duo has opposite personalities, they do have one thing in common as they are both raised by single, gay dads.Their dads meet during a business trip and fall in love. Their dads send them to the same sleepaway camp against their will in hopes that they would become friends. However, the trip leads to unexpected results and the pair find themselves becoming closer. Will the two girls be able to find a way to be together? When I first read the summary, I wasn't sure what to expect from the novel. I thought it was going to be the stereotypical novel where everyone hates each other and then they become best friends. However, while the book does go a similar route, it has something I didn't expect --- heart and authenticity. I kept rooting for Night Owl and Dogfish. I kept hoping the pair would find their way together when obstacles were keeping them apart. I also enjoyed that communication between the girls was all through emails and letters. I thought it was interesting and refreshing because I felt that characters were more open and honest with each other than they would have been if they were communicating face to face. Overall, the novel was an enjoyable read and can't wait to read more novels from the authors.
I loved the format for this book, a series of correspondence between Avery (code name Night Owl) and Bett (code name Dogfish). The two girls start corresponding when their dads begin dating and hatch a plan to send the girls to summer camp together to become friends. The format was unique and would really appeal to emerging readers. The voices that both girls develop through their writing is incredible. Each girl is uniquely her own, and I really enjoyed the "unreliable narrator" in each voice. While Bett is more adventurous, and Avery worries about everything, both are strong and spunky girls. The story is quirky but with a lot of heart. It keeps you guessing while you are falling in love with two very different girls. The nods to Parent Trap gave me all of the feels- although I am not sure younger readers will get them. All-in-all, this was a fun story that is sure to appeal to many readers! #LitReviewCrew
