This novel has a strong, fully developed male protagonist. Teens who are struggling with their sense of identity and family issues will relate to the burgeoning romances and the drawn-out emotional conflict between Bart and his father. The secondary characters are less fleshed out than Bart and Erika, but young people will still want to pick up the book. VERDICT An excellent addition to YA shelves. Excellent focus on boy figuring out who he is. Sexual orientation doesn’t matter when you are doing what you love. Well-written. A lot about synchronized swimming—I learned a lot. Excellent addition to YA.

Shannon McFerran is an amazing up and coming author. I cannot wait to read more of her work! I am hoping to use this for a book club at the school where I work, also.
